SOGHIN held its 8th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria from 9th – 12th June, 2015. The event attracted a large turnout of participants including Gastroenterologists, Surgeons, Pathologists, General Practitioners, Resident Doctors and Nurses. The Conference theme was “Infectious diseases and Gastroenterology practice in Nigeria”. Sub themes were
(a) Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers: Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), Lassa Fever (LF), Yellow Fever (YF)
(b) Gastrointestinal Malignancies
(c) HIV and the Gut
(d) Viral Hepatitis and Liver Cancer.
The guest lecture for the main conference titled “Infectious diseases and Gastroenterology practice in Nigeria” was delivered by Prof. Yisa M. Fakunle, a fore-most Gastroenterologist, and a deputy Vice- Chancellor,UniversityofIlorin,Ilorin underthe distinguished chairmanship of Prof. Bababode James Bojuwoye, a fore-most Gastroenterologist, and a past president of SOGHIN.The Scientific programme was robust in content.
The meeting was concluded with an annual general meeting. Special pre-conference postgraduate programmes were organized for Resident doctors in Gastroenterology, Surgery, Pathology, and Nurses for the pre-conference workshop. Resource persons included local and international experts such as Dr Segun Abogunde (USA), Prof Yun-Shi Zhong (China), Dr Segun Alatise (Nigeria), Dr Wole Olaomi (Nigeria) and Dr Casmir Omuemu (Nigeria). Resource persons for the Pathology course included Prof. Segun Ojo, Prof. (Mrs.) Fatima Abdulkareem, Dr. Babatunde Duduyemi, Dr. O.A. Oluwasola and Dr. K. B. Badmos.
The nurses also had a workshop under the supervision of Dr Wole Olaomi. Twenty-three (23) GI Nurses registered for the workshop and Special lectures in Gastroenterological nursing were delivered by some resource persons (local and international).
The Nigerian Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepathology, is a quarterly publication of the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN), which publishes original research on the biology and diseases of the Gut, Liver, Pancreas, Peritoneum and Spleen both in humans and experimental animal models.
